AFTER CABINET NOD, CITIZENSHIP BIL READY FOR TABLING IN HOUSE
The bill seeks to amend he citizenshipact,1995 by seeking to grant citizenship to undocumened non-muslims from Banglaesh,Pakistan& Afkanistan who came to India on or before December 31,2014.
salient features of the bill cleared by cabinet
- It inserts dec,31,2014, as the cut-off date for members of he Hindu,Buddist,Christian,Parsi,Jain & Sikh communities from Banglaesh,Pakisan&Afkanistan to be eigible to get Indian citizenship.
- It will not apply to the tribal areas of Assam,Megalaya,Mizoram & Tripura as included in the sixth schedule of the constituion and to Arunachal Pradesh,Mizoram & Nagaland which are protected by the Inner Line Permit.
- It will enable a person who does not have proof of birth of his parents in support of his being of citizenship by naturalisation on completion of six years residency.
- It reduces the mandatory requirement of 12 years stay of five years to be eligible for citizenship.
